Integrated management by information systems for rainwater reuse in hotels

The management of the rainwater reuse system can be fully integrated into hotel information systems, centralising data collection, automation, supervision and reporting for all elements of the cycle — collection, filtration, reservoirs, pumping, non-potable distribution and safety — in order to transform readings into operational decisions and management indicators. Level and flow sensors monitor volumes in reservoirs and flow between points; quality sensors (turbidity, conductivity and, where applicable, residual chlorine) ensure that non-potable water meets usage thresholds; meters in the potable and non-potable networks allow consumption to be compared; and a local rain gauge, supplemented by weather forecasts, optimises filling planning.
Gateways and local controllers (PLC/edge) aggregate signals and execute logic in real time — for example, prioritising the use of rainwater for irrigation and flushing, automatically switching to potable water if levels or quality are insufficient, and scheduling pumping outside peak hours to reduce energy costs — while a secure, segmented network ensures separation between infrastructure and guest networks.
Telemetry is stored in on-premise or cloud-based temporal databases for historical and real-time analysis, feeding operational dashboards for maintenance and operations teams, financial reports for the accounting department, and exporting metrics for communication and marketing (litres saved/year, percentage of non-potable consumption replacement, estimated CO2 reduction). Integration with PMS allows consumption forecasts to be adjusted based on occupancy and events; with ERP/financial, cost analysis, amortisation and ROI are generated; and with CMMS, work orders are automated based on alarms and preventive maintenance schedules.
Security rules in the system trigger locks and alerts if readings fall outside parameters, generate immutable logs for auditing, and support contingency plans; advanced analytics detect anomalies, estimate savings, and predict refill needs based on precipitation and occupancy. The essential KPIs to monitor are the percentage of non-potable consumption covered by rainwater, the monetary reduction in water and sanitation costs, the return on investment time, the operational availability of pumps and filters, and the environmental impact in m3 saved and tonnes of CO2 avoided. To implement, start with a survey of catchments, consumption and integration points, define the architecture (edge vs cloud), install and calibrate the instrumentation, develop switching rules and quality thresholds, integrate with hotel systems, and perform acceptance testing, training and validation of operating procedures.
Well-designed information management turns the reuse system into an efficient operational tool, a source of accounting savings, and a credible and quantifiable element of the hotel's sustainability communication.
